Jean was inspired to paint while living in New England before moving to Montrose, Colorado. Her love of the landscape drew her to painting outdoors en plein air as well as in the studio. She works primarily in oils and pastels and has been recognized with awards in both. Jean’s style springs from impressionist and abstract influence, focusing on the play of color and the rhythm of shapes in her compositions.
“Inspiration for my paintings can come from just about anywhere – the texture of grasses against a riverbank, the colors of a desert landscape, a walk to a petroglyph site, or a photo from my travels. I follow these creative sparks, playing with ideas and brainstorming an approach until a loose plan emerges and I can begin. What happens after that is very often an exploration in seeing where a painting wants to go and working to get it there. I’m a problem-solver at heart and I enjoy the challenges that pop up while creating. A new technique might inspire a project so even after many years of painting and study, I’m always on the lookout for opportunities to experiment. For me, the allure of art is that there will always be more to discover.”
